1. The Des Plaines River Trail
Located a short one mile walk away from the River Glen community, The Des Plaines River Trail is one of the best places for a scenic walk, run or bike ride during the fall months. Conveniently located a short distance from Libertyville, this trail provides 31.4 miles of "uninterrupted venture through Lake County." Animal-lovers can enjoy glimpses of the many species of birds who call this woodland their home (blue heron, cranes, woodpeckers, red-tailed hawks and peregrine falcons to name a few), and plant enthusiasts can enjoy the rich range of species, including unique wildflowers and trees.

2. Independence Grove Forest Preserve
Enjoy boating, fishing or hiking the trails of the Independence Grove Forest Preserve, located 3.5 miles from the River Glen community. Complete with a cafe, amphitheater, dog park (perfect for that jog with your favorite furry friend) and other amenities, this Libertyville gem offers a beautiful 115-acre lake and unique paths. The amphitheater hosts yearly concerts, and the beautiful preserve is also available for weddings and social gatherings. Plenty of autumn-colored trees await adventurous nature lovers.

3. Chicago Botanic Garden
If trails aren't your style, stay active by taking a walk through the stunning Chicago Botantic Garden. Approximately 30 minutes away from Libertyville, the renowned CBG is a favorite for Chicagoland natives all year round. November hosts events such as the Wonderland Express, art galleries and a monthly photo walk.

4. Robert McClory Bike Path
Weaving through multiple Illinois communities (such as Lake Forest, Highland Park and West Chicago) and parts of the Wisconsin board (as it feeds into the Kenosha County Bike Trail), this smoothly paved path caters to bicyclers specifically. Runners will also benefit from the bike path's comfortable footing, and all parties can enjoy the trail's rural patches and "grand views of amber and autumn colored trees." The Robert McClory Bike Path is also just a short drive away from the Chicago Botanic Gardens.

5. Busse Woods
Approximately 35 minutes outside of Libertyville lies 11 miles of trail in the Busse Woods Forest Preserve. Various paths wind through woodland foliage and lush meadow, weaving around a lake that's a hotspot for fishing. You may even catch a glimpse of the forest preserve's permanent residents: elk! Fun Fact: Parts of the trail are mere minutes away from Woodfield Mall and 'Streets of Woodfield'; one of the biggest shopping centers in the nation!
