Most homeowners think that living in a quaint, secluded town means giving up the livelihood of a metro area. However, Lake County's Libertyville offers up the perfect blend of small town features (historic architecture and a sense of community) and bustling suburban amenities (plenty of local events and tons of surrounding entertainment). For those who value a town with personality, Libertyville is incomparable. Currently, the National Register of Historic Places highlights a number of local buildings that encompass beautiful architecture and a rich historical background.

1. David Adler Music and Arts Center
Stop by the town's famous farmhouse-turned-home-turned-performing arts center! Remodeled from a small barn into a lovely home in 1918, architect David Adler constructed one of the most historic colonial-style buildings standing in Libertyville. Today, locals can gather to celebrate art and music with a series of workshops, concerts, exhibitions and more.

2. Church of the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Monastery
Now an active church and seminary, Libertyville's monastery has been standing since its foundation decades ago in 1928. The building's rich history includes acting as the former burial ground of Peter II, the last official king of Yugoslavia (and the only English monarch to be buried in the U.S. until 2013). Today, it remains one of the town's most beautiful buildings.

3. Cook Memorial Library Building
While the updated Cook Memorial Library currently resides in a new home, the original Cook Memorial Library Building stands as one of the town's most elegant mansions. Today it operates as a historic house museum, showcasing a beautiful Victorian neoclassical design.

4. Libertyville Public Service Building
This popular Libertyville landmark was constructed in 1928 as a bank for the community. Instantly, the Public Service Building became a community staple due to its elegant Tudor Gothic-inspired design. Over the years the building's interior has evolved and its exterior renovated, but the elegant European-style architecture remains the same.
